The muffler shop didn’t do an H-pipe crossover due to not liking the options. Idle consequently sounds like motorcycle gang in distance
. /me rethinking whether I need a crossover.

Nothing. Which is why I’m wondering if I want to sound like one in the distance and geek the squares. Because it’s there.

And unlike two banks of three each, it’s pleasantly burbly and chonky instead of sounding like anus!

A classic car that sounds like a motorcycle seems pretty crossover to me.

It’s not a bad thing if it sounds more evil, right?

Clearly what you need to do is attached a bicycle tube onto your exhaust:

That is genuinely funny. Lately, with all the new pony cars, people have been fitting some truly obnoxious sounding cat-back exhausts. Truly. Obnoxious.

Who decided; you or the shop?

I provided the shop with a service manual drawing of the original style dual exhaust setup. However, due to some subtle differences between the “mid-block” dual exhausts and the small-block transmission setup which uses a smaller case, it was not a 1:1 reference. The emergency brake cable distributor bar hangs in the middle of the transmission crossmember in such a way that the crossover pipe has to be curved or the main pipes set lower down than he liked.
All mid-block setups have the relay on the left of the crossmember and an MX Cruise-O
-Matic
, and small-block setups have the relay in the center and an FX Cruise-O-Matic. Some mounting differences.
The only small-blocks that had dual exhaust from the factory were convertibles, which had no crossover pipe, only resonators
.
He didn’t want to spend the time making that all work, and I’d given him somewhat free rein, so if I want one I can put it in myself.

1963 Ford Galaxie 500. Whole car exhaust kits are available, but not geared around converting a smallblock car to dual exhaust - and quite expensive, if one doesn’t buy a crummy one-size-fits-all kit that has a couple of special pieces and uses non-original muffler locations.

That sounds familiar. I’m surprised the exhaust shop couldn’t or didn’t or wouldn’t make that happen for you.

He probably would’ve if I’d ridden him in the shop the whole time and been insistent, but it’s not something I considered to be too critical. He’d have more likely done it if an H-pipe I provided had fit, but he had to make the drop pipes fresh, as making the pipe I provided fit would have been even more work.

I’ve never owned a car with a true dual exhaust and when and if I ever should, it’ll be a proper one, whatever that means.

Your van would not be the worst of candidates, but I think I get what you mean. Something with a V8 that is thematically appropriate to the *idea* Something fitting for one
to have checked a dual exhaust option for
on an order sheet back in the day
. A pre-cat midsize or fullsize of the 60s or 70s.
As to why I was looking at having an h-pipe, i
t’s generally prudent to limit noise and enhance a portion of the power band (very slightly) by crossing over the two banks even if one isn’t combining/splitting and has a “proper” dual exhaust
. The firing order is such that there are uneven surges of pressure which can be equalized economically by bleeding the pulses off into the opposing pipe, and shortening the active resonating length before an interruption. Not having one, and having two completely separate pipings, makes for a marginally louder idle, a slight dip in peak performance at medium revs, and so on; b
ut it sounds cool and is far better than a single exhaust.

Rusty will wind up with a single exhaust because a dual exhaust manifold would have to be custom made and prohibitively expensive. But it’ll have a slightly wider cross section and be trucky sounding.
Though Rusty may get set aside for a season longer, as a certain Oppo is offering an ‘84 Cressida for sale with the Supra 5MGE power train... I’ll see it next week. Also an in line- six. Mrs. will no doubt look askance at this, but she will not tell me “No.” We shall see. Whatever the case, I have parts for Rusty and I will make it minimally and sustainably driv able.
